SPRING HOME MAINTENANCE - TOP TO BOTTOM
THE FLOWERS ARE OUT, SUNNY DAYS ARE HERE AND NOW YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT DOING HOME MAINTENANCE. Top to Bottom is the way to go......
To help you cover all the bases, we’ve come up with a handy spring-maintenance checklist. Consult it every year and your home will thank you.
- Inspect Brickwork and Stucco - Spalling is a chipping or popping away of a brick’s face, leaving the brick’s interior susceptible to moisture and crumbling. Look for this and any deteriorated mortar that typically occurs on older homes.
2. Replace Rotted Siding or Trim, and Repaint as Necessary - Repainting siding or trim is often more than a one-weekend project. For color consistency, you just can’t just touch it up—you need to paint a whole section.
If you live in a place where there’s a lot of freezing and thawing, gutters will expand and contract, so make sure they’re flush to the roof, with no sags or dips. When scheduling your gutter cleaning ask to have us check for repairs. You may need to have your gutters re-secured. 4. Inspect Your Roof - Shingles that curl (turn up) and claw (turn down) can make your roof inefficient and susceptible to leaks. Call a minimum of three roofers before committing to one for repairs. You’ll educate yourself in the process and end up with a better deal.
5. Get a Chimney Checkup - Have a professional chimney sweep clean and inspect your active or decorative chimney. Professionals should also check the chimney flue and cap for cracks or leaking. 6. Check Your Heat/Air Unit; Change Batteries in Detectors - Change filters and clean the air purifier as needed. - Have your ducts professionally cleaned. It’ll make your indoor air quality healthier and your furnace more efficient.
7. Prune Landscaping and Create Good Drainage - Shrubs and landscaping help against soil erosion and should be planted to form a negative grade, which means water will flow away from the house. 8. Give Concrete a Little TLC - Seal and inspect asphalt or concrete driveways. Most of us put off sealing driveways until the fall, but the spring is an ideal time to do it. The sealer you use, the driveway material and climate will affect how often you need to seal your driveway. - Power-wash concrete patios, and inspect decks for rotting wood and secure railings. Seal both if necessary. 9. Don't Forget the Sump Pump - Make sure the sump pump is operating correctly, and install a battery backup pump. The backup, another pump that floats above the original pump, will kick on when the electricity goes out. If your sump pump fails, an alarm goes off, letting you know the backup is working. A few hundred dollars will save you thousands in water damage.
Happy Spring!! Enjoy the Summer!!

The weight of it all.....
Snow and ice are heavy and the weight of it in your gutters can cause serious damage to your current gutter system which will allow your home to be subject to water damage once the weather clears and everything starts melting. The problem that you run into is that after the heavy snow your gutter repairs and evaluation is too late. You also forgot to clean your gutters in the Fall so now there is even more weight in your gutter. This is why proper regular gutter maintenance is so important.
Below are some statistics from FEMA regarding snow and ice weight.
Range in Snow Weight - The weight of 1 foot of fresh snow ranges from 3 pounds per square foot for light, dry snow to 21 pounds per square foot for wet, heavy snow.
Ice - One inch of ice weighs a little less than 5 pounds per square foot, and 1 foot of ice weighs approximately 57 pounds per square foot. Ice weighs significantly more than heavy, wet snow per inch depth. In part, this is why it is important to prevent ice buildup on a roof structure and gutters. Ice dams are very heavy and dangerous.
This most recent snow fall is putting serious stress on your gutters and the fascia board that they are attached to. If your gutters are not properly secured or your fascia has begun to deteriorate due to the every day weather conditions your gutters can fall off. A fallen gutter that is not damaged is not as bad as a gutter that is hanging and bent. Once the gutter is bent it can not be repaired.
A yearly gutter maintenance check-up will alert you to any issues that may be going on with your gutters. Spring is around the corner and you might want to take the time to have your gutter system evaluated when you get your Spring gutter cleaning.

Nor'easter to hit NJ, Keltom Gutters repairs gutters!
A pretty powerful Nor' easter is coming to the the eastern part of NJ with winds ranging from 30 - 60 mph. We all know that between the 3" of rain expected and heavy winds your gutters could be at risk. Gutter maintenance is the most effective defense from rain water damage to your home. Keltom Gutter Services will check your gutters for repairs whenever you schedule a gutter cleaning. Most of the time a simple repair such as a gutter re-secure, longer downspout extensions and corner miter replacement can fix the problem. Sure, we also do gutter installation for that wind damaged gutter that was already loose and is now laying on the ground bent and broken or for the gutter that just needs to be rehung since the winds caused it to be hanging by a thread off the house.
Properly working gutters keeps the water flowing where it should be flowing....through your gutter into the downspout and away from your home. To make sure that the water is flowing away from the home and not pooling next to the foundation is to make sure your downspout extensions are long enough, the gutters are secure and to make sure your underground drains are clear. A clog in the underground drain can cause the water to back up into the gutter and flow over the front side of the gutter right next to your foundation, or worse the water can go in back of the gutters if they are not secure and wreak havoc on the fascia board and your home......so regular gutter maintenance is a must.

Ice Dams, Oh no!!!
WHAT IS AN ICE DAM?
- An Ice Dam is a hump of ice that forms at the edge of a roof under certain wintertime conditions. An ice dam can damage both your roof and the inside of your home. It will put gutters and downspouts at risk too.
- Ice Dams are a common sight in North Jersey winters. There are several things you can do to avoid getting an ice dam or to reduce the risk of damage after one has formed, but there’s really only one cure: a combination of better sealing, insulation, and venting in the attic and eaves.
HOW DO ICE DAMS FORM?
- An ice dam forms when the roof over the attic gets warm enough to melt the underside of the layer of snow on the roof. The water trickles down between the layer of snow and the shingles until it reaches the eave of the roof, which stays cold because it extends beyond the side of the house. There, the water freezes, gradually growing into a mound of ice.
WHY SHOULD I CLEAN MY GUTTERS
- The gutters play an important part when ice dams form. If the gutters are clogged with debris before the snow falls there is a cushion for the snow and ice to build up. Heavy snow and ice can cause your gutters to to come away from the fascia. Make sure that your gutters are tightly secured before the winter. Keltom Gutters offers gutter repair service
WHAT DAMAGE DO ICE DAMS CAUSE?
- When an ice dam gets big enough, melted water backs up behind it and seeps underneath the shingles. Eventually, it will drip into the insulation and down into the ceilings and exterior walls beneath the eave, ruining sheet rock and paint. If the ice dam breaks free, it can pull shingles and gutters off with it, and it will damage anything it falls on: shrubs, windowsills, cars, pets, and people. If the roof sheathing stays wet, it can form mildew and start to rot.
HOW CAN YOU DEAL WITH AN ICE DAM?
There are two avenues of attack: dealing with an existing ice dam and preventing one in the first place.
DEALING WITH EXISTING ICE DAMS
- Remove the ice dam by breaking it free in small chucks. Do NOT use an ax or other sharp tool! You’ll cut through the shingles OR bend you gutters. Instead, tap lightly with a blunt mallet. This is slow, dangerous work, so hire someone experienced at roofing. Even if you do it safely, the chunks of ice can take pieces of shingle with them.
- Clear out gutters and downspouts. Again, this is ladder work and an easy way to damage either plastic or metal gutters and spouts.
- Melt troughs through the ice dam with calcium chloride ice melter. Do NOT use rock salt! It will damage paint, metals, and plants beneath the eave and wherever the salty water drains.
PREVENTING ICE DAM
-
Stopping ice dams is simple, in principle: Just keep the entire roof the same temperature as the eaves. You do that by increasing ventilation, adding insulation, and sealing off every possible air leak that might warm the underside of the roof, as shown in the illustration below. By taking care of these trouble spots, listed here in order of priority, you should enjoy a winter free of dams and use less energy to boot.
1. Ventilate Eaves And Ridge
A ridge vent paired with continuous soffit vents circulates cold air under the entire roof. Both ridge and soffit vents should have the same size openings and provide at least 1 square foot of opening for every 300 square feet of attic floor. Place baffles at the eaves to maintain a clear path for the airflow from the soffit vents.2. Cap the Hatch
An unsealed attic hatch or whole-house fan is a massive opening for heat to escape. Cover them with weatherstripped caps made from foil-faced foam board held together with aluminum tape.3. Exhaust to the Outside
Make sure that the ducts connected to the kitchen, bathroom, and dryer vents all lead outdoors through either the roof or walls, but never through the soffit.4. Add Insulation
More insulation on the attic floor keeps the heat where it belongs. To find how much insulation your attic needs, check with your local building department.5. Install Sealed Can Lights
Old-style recessed lights give off great plumes of heat and can't be insulated without creating a fire hazard. Replace them with sealed "IC" fixtures, which can be covered with insulation.6. Flash Around Chimneys
Bridge the gap between chimney and house framing with L-shaped steel flashing held in place with unbroken beads of a fire-stop sealant. Using canned spray foam or insulation isn't fire safe.7. Seal and Insulate Ducts
Spread fiber-reinforced mastic on the joints of HVAC ducts and exhaust ducts. Cover them entirely with R-5 or R-6 foil-faced fiberglass.8. Caulk Penetrations
Seal around electrical cables and vent pipes with a fire-stop sealant. Also, look for any spots where the light shines up from below or the insulation is stained black by the dirt from passing air.HOPE THIS HELPS.....CALL NOW TO SCHEDULE YOUR GUTTER CLEANING!!

WHY DO I NEED GUTTER CLEANING?
Our gutter cleaning service is one of the easiest ways to avoid damage to your home. Regular gutter maintenance is one of the most important home maintenance chores you need to do.
Gutters or leaders act as the first defense against rain and snow damage on key parts of your home. When cleaned annually or biannually, we prepare them for any moisture by draining it away from the home and into the yard. It’s important to clean them out twice a year—especially in autumn after leaves fall—to avoid paying thousands of dollars on repairs to the roof, foundation, or siding from seasonal storms and improper drainage.
The downspouts also play a key role in the gutters as well. If they are filled with debris, then the water will not drain into the yard, which means back-filling the gutters which cause damage to the soffit, fascia and siding and very likely the house interior.
Several factors come into play with our gutter cleaning service: is the home multi-level or single level? How many sides of your house have gutters, what type of roof does the house have, does the house have any type of gutter guard or screens? Why do we ask about the type of roof you have? If you have a slate or cedar roof then our technicians will not walk on the roof. Solid gutter guards on top of your gutters need special attention....as a result you may think that debris will not get into the gutters but build up of debris over the years can cause your gutters to block and cause water damage. Birds like to build nests and small animals hide their food and treats in your gutters! Screens on your gutters also require special attention. Screens come loose and leaves and debris accumulate.
Have copper gutters? Ladder stabilizers are used to make sure the ladders do not touch the gutters.
NOW is the time to gt your gutters cleaned to protect your home.
