AccuWeather says rough winter for Jersey...

If the latest long-range forecast is correct, it's a good time to start shopping for a new snow shovel AND CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS!!

AccuWeather, in its new long-range forecast, predicts it will feel like an extended winter for New Jersey and Pennsylvania as cold and snowy conditions will likely stretch into spring 2017.

Frequent storms across the northeastern U.S. — particularly in the Northeast — this winter may lead to an above-normal season for snowfall.

"I think the Northeast is going to see more than just a few, maybe several, systems in the course of the season," AccuWeather Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok said in a news release.

Unlike last season, in which most of winter's snowfall came from a few heavy-hitting storms, this winter will last into the early or middle part of spring and will feature frequent snow events.

Pastelok said much of the accumulation will be in New Jersey, the Philadelphia metropolitan area and south of Washington, D.C. These areas will see a handful of changeover systems, where falling snow transitions to rain and sleet.

Overall, it's predicted that the region will total a below-normal number of subzero days, though the temperature will average 3-5 degrees Fahrenheit lower than last year.

However, the new year will usher in a pattern change as a sudden burst of cold air penetrates the region.

THE DREADED FALL MAINTENANCE

Ok, so it's something that has to be done....below is a list of the top fall maintenance chores.

  • Have your furnace or chimney cleaned-It’s been awhile since you’ve had to light any fires or turn on the heat, but soon those cold temperatures will be back. Have a qualified technician come in and check it out. Don’t forget to change your furnace filter too!
  • Check for roof damage- Now is the time to see the damage before it’s covered up by ice, snow, and whatever Oklahoma weather throws at us.
  • Clean out gutters and downspouts-Don’t let that debris clutter up. It could cause bigger damage later on.
  • Double check your caulk-Check for caulk corrosion around doors and windows to make sure there’s not deterioration. Also, check around showers, bathtubs, sinks, and toilets to make they are all seal accordingly. With cold temperatures, bugs love to find any path into a warm space.
  • Clean out the clothes dryer exhaust duct and area beneath the dryer- Remove any fire hazard by removing all lint, dust, and pieces of material that may have made its way down there.
  • Exam your electrical outlets for any wear and tear or potential fire hazards. Frayed wires or ill-fitting plugs can all be red flags.
  • Update your fire extinguisher- Make sure your fire extinguisher is still up to date. Not to mention, some companies offer a discount just for having one.
  • Inspect your smoke detectors- Check all the batteries and make sure there is at least one on each floor of your home.

Many of the chores listed you can do your self but I personally don't recommend that you go on the roof for any chore.  Accidents happen - why take a chance when there are people like us whose job it is to inspect, clean and service your gutters. Been in business over 23 years in 12 counties in NJ so by this time we know what we are doing. That's our job

Keltom Gutters helps Out Low-lying Mercer County

Why are Mercer County homes more at risk for possible water damage then other counties?  Mercer County is flat and low-lying on the inner coastal plain and we know that any extra water around your home's foundation can cause serious damage.

Gutters or leaders act as the first defense against rain and snow damage on key parts of your home. When cleaned annually or biannually, they are then prepared for any moisture by draining it away from the home and into the yard. It’s important to clean them out twice a year—especially in autumn after leaves fall—to avoid paying thousands of dollars on repairs to the roof, foundation, or siding from seasonal storms and improper drainage.

Our company is the premier gutter cleaning company for those homes that have special needs.. You know who you are...wood, metal and slate roofs, copper gutters, solar panels, heating cables...we take special care of you. We don't walk on specialty roofs and we use stand-offs so our ladders don't damage your copper gutters. Our techs are instructed to be especially careful of your heating cables and solar panels.  Call us if you have questions about our gutter cleaning maintenance agreements, guttering cleaning estimates, repair procedures and pricing, advise on gutter installations or any other gutter related issues!!!

Call today for a FREE quote on new seamless aluminium or copper  gutters and downspouts, gutter and fascia repairs, and gutter cleanings. We are happy to offer LOCK IN YOUR PRICE SERVICE AGREEMENTS on gutter cleanings!!!

The Hidden Drain...and the problems that can go with it

So you have a house with gutters and downspouts...almost everyone does.  Where is your water going when it rains?  Everyone knows that water  can cause wet basements and corrosion of the foundation.   Is your water going into an underground drain?  Do you maintain that drain? Just like anything else underground drains need regular check-ups and maintenance.   Nothing stays clean and free flowing forever.

Drainage systems have unique problems. Sometimes the end of the drain goes nowhere...you know it was installed but not quite sure where it goes.  Sometimes the pipe does not lead into a tank, or even into the street at the end of the line.  Have you found the end of the pipe and do you see water coming out when it is raining?  This is the easiest way to determine if your underground drain is working.

The simplest solution to avoiding any problems with the underground drainage system is to not use it. Yes, don't use it. It costs plenty to have that drain cleaned and fixed if broken underground compared to the cost of having a gutter cleaning.  Better to use downspout extensions, strainers, and have regular gutter cleanings.  Now is Spring maintenance season call us for a quote on a gutter cleaning, maintenance service agreements, gutter repairs, installations.   973-852-7100.   Request a quote online. www.keltomgutterservices.com

Oh geez...I think I need new gutters.

So you think you need new gutters??  Maybe, maybe not. It's been raining for 2 days and water is overflowing from the gutters ruining your landscaping,  splashing mulch on the house, the basement is getting wet, waters flowing into the house through the window...you know all the nasty things that can happen.  First things first...when is the last time you had the gutters cleaned? Be honest...a year ago, 3 years ago, 5 years ago!  OK,  first thing schedule a cleaning.  A clean gutter is a happy gutter and if they're happy then so are you. If you are still having a problem maybe the gutters need to be re-pitched due to heavy winter ice and snow or water accumulation due to dirty gutters.  Weight in the gutters can cause the gutters to pull away from the fascia and the pitch of the gutter may change.  Maybe your fascia is rotting and the gutters have nothing to hold on to. Now, if your gutter is torn off for whatever reason and all bent or broken then you definitely need new gutters!!! You may want to look at all the new colors and copper look a likes available now on our website.  We offer free written estimates on installations and are always available to talk about what type of repairs you may need.  Give us a call 1-800-535-8660 to schedule a cleaning before you need major repairs or new gutters.

SPRING HOME MAINTENANCE - TOP TO BOTTOM

Hi...it's finally Spring and many of you are thinking of beginning the many maintenance and cleaning chores that have to be done after the winter and before summer vacations start. Here at Keltom Gutters, the phones will be ringing off the hook pretty soon and I just want to remind you about the easiest way to get everything done in time for that all important first BBQ.  I don't know how many times people ask me to remind our technicians to be careful not to get gutter debris on the windows!!  As always we do the best we can to not dirty your windows but....Gutters AND roofs are first....The recommended all important step to remember is....TOP to BOTTOM.  Start with any roof cleaning or repairs, chimney repairs, etc. and work your way down..... gutter installations and repairs,  fascia and soffit repairs, window cleaning and screen repairs, siding repairs, and painting. Then go a little lower and plant your bushes, flowers etc. and finally mulch.  If you think about it it makes sense.  The last thing you want is a ladder, hoses, roofing tools, or paint splatters on your that beautiful landscaping!!

HAPPY SPRING!!!!
